Tokyo Rail Pass
The Clever Voyage team recently visited Japan for their magical cherry blossom season and discovered a great new Tokyo Rail Pass for tourists visiting Tokyo. The JR East rail company have introduced a new Tokyo Rail Pass which can be a very convenient and affordable option for visitors.
The pass costs 10,000 yen (approx $90USD) for 3 days of unlimited travel in the Tokyo wider area on all JR rail services including Shinkansen (bullet trains) and limited express trains. The bullet trains are arguably the best way to see the city and its surrounds including the iconic Mt Fuji.
Another great bonus of the Tokyo Wide Rail pass is it allows you to go skiing at Gala Ski resort during winter for only 3,000 yen.
This is amazing value as a one way train trip from Narita airport (the main gateway airport to Japan) is already 3,000 yen.
This rail pass can only be purchased by foreign visitors to Japan but unlike most other rail passes available for Japan Railways, this one does not need to be purchased before arrival. The ideal option for the spontaneous traveller!
We got our pass at the JR Ticket Office at the Narita Airport Terminal 2. All purchase locations and further details can be found here on the official website:
This pass may be useful if you are in Japan for 10 days and also plan to purchase a full week long JR Rail pass. On our recent trip, we used the Tokyo Wide Rail pass to explore Tokyo on the first 3 days of our trip and then used our week long rail pass to visit Hiroshima and Osaka.
